Why Relaxing Your Pelvic Floor is Key for an Easier Labor and Delivery

When preparing for labor and delivery, many moms-to-be focus on how to push. But what if I told you that pushing isn’t really your job? Your uterus is actually the powerhouse behind the process, and your role is to work with your body—not against it.

As a pelvic floor physical therapist specializing in pregnancy and postpartum, I see so many women who unknowingly hold too much tension in their pelvic floor muscles. And here’s the thing—a tight pelvic floor can make labor harder! Understanding how your body works and learning how to relax your pelvic floor can lead to a smoother, more efficient birth experience.

Your Uterus Does the Heavy Lifting

During labor, your uterus contracts rhythmically to push your baby down toward the birth canal. These contractions are strong and involuntary, meaning they will happen whether you’re actively “pushing” or not.

Think of your uterus like a powerful muscle that’s squeezing from the top down, helping your baby move lower with each contraction. Your pelvic floor, on the other hand, is at the bottom of this process, and its job during labor is simple: to get out of the way!

If your pelvic floor muscles are tight and clenching, they can create resistance, making it harder for your baby to descend. But if they’re relaxed and open, your baby has a much smoother path out.

Why Relaxing Your Pelvic Floor is Crucial

Many of us carry tension in our bodies without even realizing it—especially in times of stress (and let’s be honest, labor is a pretty intense moment!). If you’ve ever caught yourself clenching your jaw, tensing your shoulders, or gripping your fists, your pelvic floor might be doing the same thing.

A tense pelvic floor during labor can:
🚫 Slow down baby’s descent
🚫 Make pushing harder and less effective
🚫 Increase the risk of tearing
🚫 Lead to more discomfort during contractions

By practicing pelvic floor relaxation techniques during pregnancy, you can train your body to release tension when it matters most.

How to Practice Pelvic Floor Relaxation for Labor

One of the best ways to prepare is by using breathwork to connect with your pelvic floor.

Try this simple exercise:

1️⃣ Inhale deeply through your nose—as you breathe in, imagine your pelvic floor muscles softening and dropping, almost like a flower opening.
2️⃣ Exhale slowly through your mouth—gently lift and engage your pelvic floor.
3️⃣ Repeat this exercise daily in different positions to build awareness and control.

By practicing this now, you’ll be more prepared to release tension and allow your baby to move down naturally when labor begins.

Final Thoughts: Trust Your Body

Labor and delivery are designed to work with your body, not against it. Your uterus is incredibly strong, and by learning how to relax your pelvic floor and breathe through contractions, you can help your body do what it was made to do.
