Why Sprint Training Maintenance Matters for Baseball Athletes
In the world of baseball performance, few things matter more than speed — but maintaining it in-season is often overlooked. Athletes can spend 8 to 10 weeks in the offseason developing acceleration, explosiveness, mechanics and speed. However, once the season begins, that sprint training often vanishes from their program. This sudden drop-off is one of the leading contributors to hamstring injuries and overall performance decline.
When sprinting stops, detraining begins. Research shows that speed qualities begin to drop off within just five days of inactivity. That means if a baseball athlete sprints only once per week or skips sprinting altogether, they lose a key element of their performance base. Then, when they’re suddenly required to sprint at full effort in a game — without having prepared their body for it — injuries happen. The most common? Hamstring strains.
Sprinting is not just a skill — it’s also one of the most powerful injury-prevention tools in your toolbox. Regular exposure to high-speed running maintains neuromuscular control, elasticity, and tissue resilience, particularly in the hamstrings and posterior chain. That’s why in-season sprint maintenance isn’t just optional — it’s essential.
For most athletes, 2 sprint sessions per week is the sweet spot. This allows the athlete to preserve speed without overly taxing the nervous system or interfering with practices and games. Each session doesn’t need to be long: 2-3 high-intensity reps of 20 to 30 yards at 95%+ effort is typically enough to get the job done.
It’s important to remember that during the season, the sport is the priority. The goal isn’t to keep building sprint capacity like in the offseason — it's to maintain what you’ve already earned. Supporting drills like lifting, jumping, and tempo runs serve this maintenance goal, but nothing replaces high-velocity sprinting.
When athletes stop sprinting, they not only lose speed — they increase injury risk. And for pitchers & , position players, that’s the worst-case scenario. The answer? Keep sprinting. Keep it intentional. Keep it minimal but intense.
